Picking the right sticker material is not just about appearance. The material determines whether a sticker survives outdoors, whether it peels cleanly from packaging, and how well it takes fine-detail print. Here is a breakdown of the main options and when to use each.
Material Types
White vinyl is the standard choice for most sticker orders. It accepts vibrant CMYK print, resists moisture and can be applied to bottles, packaging, equipment and glass. Permanent adhesive holds well on smooth surfaces. UV coating or laminate adds extra protection against fading and scratching.
Clear vinyl is the same vinyl base but transparent, letting the surface colour show through. It works well on glass jars and bottles where a no-label look is desired. Print must be more opaque to show clearly on dark surfaces; a white ink underbase is often needed.
Kraft paper gives a natural, organic look. It is popular with artisan food producers, candle makers and eco-conscious brands. It accepts print well but is not waterproof. Use indoors only, or laminate for a degree of moisture resistance.
Holographic film catches light and produces an iridescent rainbow shimmer. It is used for product branding, limited edition packaging and promotional giveaways. Print sits over the holographic layer, so designs with bold contrast work better than fine detail.
Weatherproof vinyl is a heavier-duty version of white vinyl, usually with a thicker face stock and a more aggressive adhesive. Suitable for outdoor equipment labels, bumper stickers and anything that will face rain, temperature swings or UV.
Adhesive Options
| Adhesive Type | Best For |
|---|---|
| Permanent | Packaging, equipment, bottles |
| Removable | Temporary labels, window stickers, seasonal promotions |
| Freezer-grade | Food labels stored below 0 degrees C |
| High-tack | Rough or textured surfaces |
Removable adhesive leaves minimal residue and lifts cleanly within a few weeks. Permanent adhesive is difficult to remove without tearing the sticker or leaving a sticky mark.
Cut Styles
Die-cut stickers are cut to the exact outline of the artwork, giving a custom shape. They look premium and suit logos and illustrated designs.
Kiss-cut stickers are cut through the face stock but not the backing sheet, so the sticker sits on a square or rectangular backing. Easier to peel and handle in bulk; popular for promotional packs and Etsy sellers.
Sheet stickers print multiple designs on one A4 or A5 sheet. Low cost, fast production, good for variety packs or sample sets.
| Style | Cost | Appearance | Best Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Die-cut | Medium | Custom shape | Branded product stickers |
| Kiss-cut | Medium | Shape on backing | Promotional, retail |
| Sheet | Low | Multi on one sheet | Variety packs, proofs |
