A correctly cured DTG print on a 100% cotton garment typically lasts 30 to 50 wash cycles at 30 degrees C. Poor wash habits can halve that figure. Good habits can extend it beyond 60 washes.
This guide covers the factors that affect print lifespan and the care steps that make the biggest difference. For the full printing service, visit our direct to garment printing page.
What Affects DTG Print Durability?
Fabric type
100% ring-spun or combed cotton produces the most durable DTG prints. The ink bonds into the cotton fibres during curing. Poly-cotton blends above 20% reduce bond strength because polyester fibres resist water-based ink.
Curing quality
The garment must reach the correct temperature for the correct duration in the curing tunnel. Under-cured prints feel slightly tacky or peel after the first wash. Printing Planet UK uses a calibrated tunnel dryer on every order.
Dark vs light garment
Dark garments use a white underbase printed before the colour layer. This extra ink layer must fully bond during curing. Dark garment prints are slightly more vulnerable to cracking under rough wash conditions than light garment prints.
Print size and ink coverage
Larger prints with heavy ink coverage wear faster than small logo prints. A full-front photographic print will show wear sooner than a small chest logo after the same number of washes.
Detergent and wash temperature
Biological detergents and hot washes degrade the ink bond faster than non-bio detergent at 30 degrees C.
Wash Care Rules for DTG Prints
- Wash inside out – reduces direct friction on the print surface
- 30 degrees C maximum – higher temperatures degrade the ink bond
- Non-bio or gentle detergent – biological enzymes attack the ink
- No fabric softener – softener coats fibres and reduces ink adhesion over time
- No tumble dry – high heat accelerates fading and cracking; air dry only
- Do not iron on the print – iron inside out or use a pressing cloth
DTG vs Other Methods on Durability
| Method | Expected wash life |
|---|---|
| DTG (correct care) | 30 to 50 washes |
| DTF transfers | 50 to 75 washes |
| Screen printing | 100 or more washes |
| Vinyl | 40 to 60 washes |
If maximum durability is the priority for workwear or sports kit, screen printing or DTF printing is a better choice than DTG. For a full method comparison, read our DTG vs DTF printing guide.
What If the Print Cracks Early?
Early cracking or fading before 20 washes is almost always caused by under-curing during production, a hot wash, tumble dry, or fabric softener. If you follow correct care and the print still fades quickly, contact the printer with photos of the damage.
