Direct-to-Film (DTF) prints bond to fabric using a heat-activated adhesive powder. The bond is strong, but it is not indestructible. Washing and drying the garment correctly is the main factor that determines how long the print lasts.
Washing Rules
Temperature: Wash at 30 degrees Celsius (cold or cool cycle). Higher temperatures soften the adhesive and cause the print to crack or peel.
Turn inside out: Before loading into the machine, turn the garment inside out. This protects the print surface from friction against other items in the drum.
Detergent: Use a standard liquid detergent. Avoid washing powders with abrasive particles or detergents marketed as heavy-duty stain removers, as these can attack the print surface.
Do not bleach: Bleach degrades both the adhesive and the print inks. Even colour-safe bleach should be avoided.
Drying Rules
No tumble dryer. Heat from tumble drying is the fastest way to damage a DTF print. The adhesive layer softens, the print may bubble or peel, and the colour fades faster.
Air dry flat or hang. Hang the garment inside out on a hanger or lay flat on a drying rack. Keep out of direct sunlight to prevent UV fading.
Ironing Rules
Do not iron directly over the print. The heat will melt the adhesive and the iron will stick to the surface.
If ironing is needed: Turn the garment inside out and iron on the reverse. Use the lowest heat setting appropriate for the fabric (cotton setting is usually too hot without the inside-out protection).
How Long DTF Prints Last
| Care Method | Expected Wash Cycles |
|---|---|
| Correct (30C, inside out, air dry) | 50+ |
| Warm wash (40C), machine dry | 20 to 30 |
| Hot wash (60C+) or tumble dry | 10 to 15 |
Print Method Comparison: Durability
| Method | Average Wash Durability | Feel |
|---|---|---|
| DTF | 50+ with correct care | Slight raised layer |
| Vinyl | 30 to 50 | Smooth, raised |
| DTG | 30 to 50 | Soft, no layer |
| Screen print | 100+ | Flat, integrated |
